In this series you meet different members of the VetFamily team. We are currently around 100 people with 16 different nationalities working in 9 countries, and we are always looking for new stars to join us. This time we interviewed Valeria Ragagnin, our business intelligence superstar.

You are a Business Intelligence Manager at VetFamily, what does that mean?

I take care of our precious data, ensuring our data pipelines work in the optimal way and I make sure data are always available when needed. I create reports for my colleagues who are hands-on supporting our member clinics, ensuring data is always perfect! Business growth is based on revenue and strategy, and strategy is based on data. Having a healthy data-base is crucial to being able to take the most important decisions for our family!

What challenges do you tackle on an average day and how do you solve them?

The business intelligence team is quite new and as all new things it has to handle both some pretty technical and architectural concerns. On a more concrete level, sometimes pipelines crash and I need to spend time investigating, finding bugs and remove hexes from databases. When I run in to any mysterious data issue, the marvelous VetFamily data team help me check it and that is always a successful investigation, we feel like detectives on a mission! And when we succeed, that is when the real magic starts to happen.

How do you in your role make life better for an independent vet clinic?

All the business intelligence analysis we do aim to optimize the life of veterinary clinics. We want to ensure clinics have access to the best supplier deals and make the best use of them, this for them to be able to focus on providing the best service to the most important thing here – our beloved pets.

How did you end up at VetFamily?

I spent almost 5 years in my previous role in another company, but when I understood VetFamily’s mission I could not resist joining. It is amazing to help veterinarians to do their job the very best. It was even better than what I hoped because in VetFamily I found amazing colleagues, just love them all!

Tell us a bit about your background?

I am Italian, I studied computer science and since I got my degree I travelled a lot, lived in three different countries, learning a lot and now I am happily settled in Stockholm. I love music, computer and data. And cats, I love cats.

What top 3 advice would you give to women who are interested in a tech career at VetFamily?

Vetfamily is a fast-growing environment, and we want to be on the edge with technologies! So:

  • Do not be afraid to propose new tools or solutions, we are always improving and it is amazing having new ideas take shape in our stack!
  • Collaboration is key. Do not fear code reviews, all purrr request are reviewed with LOVE.
  • Our team has many women, and this is a strength!

Finally, you obviously love cats, share your secrets to the perfect cat relationship?

I’ll tell you a story. Once upon a time, there was a girl. Time passed, and one year after, there was a happy girl with a cat. Some time passed and after another year, there was a joyful girl and five cats. After two years, there were a star-eyed girl and twenty five cats. You do see where this is going, right? There is simply no upper limit to the number of cats one can have. Just set the goal to increase your cat ratio every year and you and your cats will live a very happy life. 😊
