Employee Spotlight: Elise Bertet-Morizur
Welcome to this series where you will meet different members of the VetFamily team. We are currently around 100 people with 16 different nationalities working in 9 countries, and we are always looking for new stars to join us. This time we interviewed one of our digital heroes, Elise Bertet-Morizur, in France.
How come you ended up working with digital solutions?
This is a good question because as a veterinarian, it’s not an obvious career path! I started working in a vet practice, and then spent a few years in a pharmaceutical company. I met a lot of French veterinarians, and something was apparent – vets had way too many responsibilities and didn’t have the time they would like to have for their patients. If I wanted to help, we would need efficient tools. That’s how I started thinking of different digital solutions. Finally, I had this great discussion with a computer engineer named Laure, and we decided to start our own company. This was back in 2017.
What is your role at VetFamily?
I have been working for VetFamily for over a year now, since July 2020 when Laure and I sold the company we had started, Elia-digital, to VetFamily. Today I am the product owner of the tool Amadeo, a digital solution for purchase data management. On a daily basis I work with design of product development, database maintenance and quality, meetings with internal and external stakeholders, and everything that needs to be done. 😊
How do you in your role make life better for an independent vet clinic?
The digital tool that I work with supports the VetFamily purchasing team and the VetFamily team out on the field helping our members. So indirectly, I help the clinic to purchase what they need at a good price without spending too much time and energy. If you start thinking about all that we could do to make life better for a vet clinic, what I do personally might be quite little, but when we put all our different activities and services together we are moving fast forward and really have a positive impact.
What does working in the veterinary industry mean to you?
I decided to go into veterinary studies mainly because I love animals and the state of mind of people working with them. As a vet, I’m restricted to the veterinary industry, but this industry offers a large variety of professional opportunities. My career so far is a good example.
What do you like to do when you are not working?
First, spending time with my family and traveling. I also like to design and create things, for example sewing or tinkering. My main achievements are probably my wedding dress, and an electric solar bike to participate in the competition The Sun Trip.
What do you do to keep your cool and focus when things go haywire or there are simply just too many tasks to be done?
I make sure to get some sleep 😊. Of course, like most other people I get stressed, but I know that when I’m tired, everything looks overwhelming. I learnt from experience that it’s better for me to write down all that needs to be done and continue the following morning when I’m fresh and can focus for hours. As a young parent, I may have to balance that though, sometimes in the morning you don’t really know if and when you got any sleep during the night. Then at least I know why I feel like it’s the end of the world and I make sure to avoid difficult decisions.
What is your top advice based on experience on how to get the most out of working in an international team at different locations?
Since 2017, Laure and I are working from different locations in France. And now as part of VetFamily, we work with people in Sweden and several other countries. My top advice is to be cautious when using written communication: the message can be blurred by different cultural backgrounds, language skills or just the daily mood. So goodwill and humbleness are key for working well together. And make sure to see each other from time to time.
